Golden hour, blue hour and the twilights are all defined by exactly one thing: how far the sun is above or below the horizon, measured as an angle in degrees. Once you start thinking in terms of that angle rather than clock time, the entire sequence of a sunrise or sunset snaps into a logical order, and you can predict what any moment will look like anywhere on Earth.

How they overlap

The most common point of confusion is that these ranges are not mutually exclusive — they are different ways of slicing the same continuous descent of the sun, defined by different communities for different purposes. Blue hour sits entirely inside civil twilight. Golden hour straddles the horizon, beginning while the sun is still 6° up and ending only once it is 4° down, so it overlaps both daylight and the start of twilight. Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight are the formal navigational and astronomical definitions; golden and blue hour are the photographers' names for the two most useful slices within them. That overlap is good news: golden hour flows straight into blue hour with no gap at all, so a single outing captures both if you don't pack up early.

Because every one of these phases depends on the sun's angle, their timing and length change with your latitude and the season.
