Blue hour is the short window of twilight when the sun is between about 4° and 6° below the horizon — right after golden hour ends in the evening, or just before it begins in the morning. The sky glows a deep, even cobalt while there is still enough light to expose a scene, which is why it pairs so well with the warm artificial lights of a city.
Read the morning and evening durations for your selected city and date above. This calculator measures the narrow −6° to −4° band, which can last only about ten minutes at some locations and dates. Broader definitions of blue-looking twilight can give longer windows. Latitude and season change the duration; near the poles a window can continue overnight or not occur on the selected date.
Use a tripod for slow shutter speeds, keep ISO low when the scene allows it, and shoot RAW to adjust white balance afterward. City skylines, bridges and water reflections work well when the sky and artificial lights have similar brightness. For an evening shoot, start during golden hour and stay for blue hour. For a morning shoot, arrive before blue hour begins and continue into golden hour.
